Marianne Dandurand, Member of Parliament for Compton–Stanstead, is highlighting a contribution of $68,441 to the Centre d’action bénévole de la MRC de Coaticook (CAB) to support the development of its gardening project through the Local Food Infrastructure Fund (LFIF).

The federal funding enabled the Centre d’action bénévole de la MRC de Coaticook to acquire garden towers, soil, compost, and handling equipment for its gardening and food production activities, as well as for food transportation.

“By producing some of its own vegetables, the Centre d’action bénévole de la MRC de Coaticook has found an innovative way to provide fresh food to its clients while reducing costs,” said Ms. Dandurand, adding that she hopes to see similar initiatives expand across the region.

Julie Berger, Executive Director of the Centre d’action bénévole de la MRC de Coaticook, highlighted the benefits of the garden towers for the organization’s activities and its school workshops.

“This funding allows us to sustain our gardening project and increase access to fresh food for the people we support. Thanks to the garden towers, we will also be able to offer educational workshops in selected elementary schools and introduce young people to the joys of growing food, discovering new foods, and developing food self-sufficiency. This project is fully aligned with the vision of the Territorial Food System, which aims to build a more supportive, educational, and food-resilient community.”

Since 2019, more than 1,425 projects have been funded through the Local Food Infrastructure Fund (LFIF), which supports food security initiatives across Canada.
